I love all animals. We were never without pets as children. We had labradors, cats, budgie, tortoise, rabbits, Guinea pigs, fish and probably more. Never less than a couple at a time.

Since I left home I always had cats. Mainly as I was single and working and you can’t leave a dog. Now I have just the one cat and my brother has a black Labrador that I share with him 🤣🤣

I couldn’t live without a pet in my home. When I have been ‘between pets’ it’s been horrible, quiet and hair free 🙄.

Oh and I’ve just remembered the hamsters …

Dogs for me! Chuckie, a fluff ball golden retriever who got me through post natal depression. He was my constant companion and protector for both me and my girls. Like you, I’m still devastated by his loss. A golden retriever is forever known as a chuckie dog.

Next was Alfie - a real life version of Scooby Doo! Who was scared of our chickens yet loved then in equal measures.

Today our hearts are filled by the unconditional love given by Storm! Like Dottie & Beau she’s 3 and never fails to know what you need from her and when you need it.

Dogs are fab. They’re family. X

I’ve been very fortunate to grow up with dogs and my earliest memory is the collie we had who was scared of the cat. We had a rough collie who when we went looking for a dog at the rescue a small female is what we went for and came back with this fluffiest biggest male rough collie and he use to herd us up like sheep and forever play ball. We have had a whole range of dogs but when we moved into our own home we picked out the most neediest but loving dog ever a chocolate Labrador and when I used to tell people we had a chocolate lab puppy they laughed and now I know why he really has chocolate for brains but he is my baby although I have a son this dog is my baby as I said he is the neediest but yet so loving and he goes by the name of snickers xx

If you'd asked me 20 years ago, I'd have said cats and only cats. But even then, the closest I'd come to a pet was some short-lived goldfish and a stick insect!

I thought I hated dogs, or had a few for them.

We got Sonu Singh, my Punjabi feline son, 8 years ago. And it's been wonderful having the love of my fur baby!

We even had more gold fish, and tropical fish. Then my pair of parrotlets, too.

But a niggle was always there in the back of my mind about dogs.

Hubby and the kids would love a pup.

Hubby's cousin came over with their old Staff, Alfie, and memories unravelled as I began to lose my fear of interacting with this hulk of a dog.

I wasn't afraid of dogs. I was afraid of the attachment.

Because when I was growing up, we would visit the family in Kenya most summers. My family there has farms, with many dogs; fierce guard dogs, but also, friendly, pers, too.

I recalled Lassie, a dog at my father's farm. She was a huge favourite of mine.

One summer she was with puppies, and had several, but died while giving birth.

I remember being distraught.

It made me feel like we should never allow ourselves to get too close to these beautiful creatures because it hurt when they passed.

I was around 8 at the time.

However, now, and over the last few years, I'd love a dog, too...

I'm an animal person (but if Sonu Singh asks, cars are obviously on top!)
