You have summed up how I sometimes feel re posh nosh. It usually leaves me hungry after someone with their arm glued behind their back explains that chef had prepared for me a squidgy of this, a dash of that, a blob of this that and the other with a deconstructed crumble for afters. Said crumble is usually crumbs, a few pieces of strewed fruit and a minuscule jug of custard.
Yep! I love poached egg on toast, also like smashed avocado, don’t hate me. I love Ambrosia creamed rice, thick yellow custard but I salivated over Angel Delight when I was a child. Oh the nostalgia!
But I am rather proud of the fact that eating sea Bass whole, head and tail etc at a restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean, some French diners were overheard saying ( in French) ‘ look at those english people they know how to eat that fish, how unusual and there are no chips with it!’ They guffawed away until we got up after our meal and politely wished them a good day, remarked how excellent the fish was and that we would never eat chips with such an exquisite meal and wished them a pleasant rest of their weekend… and recommended a Michelin star restaurant in London ( all in french)
Food is a serious business, but some it seems take it too seriously.
Why don’t you have your favourites at your dinner party? Some places are now serving bangers and mash and fish and chips etc as posh nosh and what’s wrong with that!
I'm sure they could make little cones and serve fish fingers and chips, but they'd call then fish goujons and potato julienne or something like that! Mini Frey Bentos pies and little triangles of toast with several beans laying atop, as finger foods... perfect! I can't wait!!!
Love your post! I got it! Didn’t understand much of the different dishes from your growing up days (I’m a Texas girl) but I still ‘got it’! Love you my sweet friend!
Ha ha are you sure we didn’t have the same mother 😂😂😂. We certainly ate the same food! Other regulars were fish fingers and chips, roast dinners, tinned fruit with carnation milk, Angel Delight, homemade rice pudding, spotted dick and custard. I could go on. What I wouldn’t give for a slice of mums suet jam roll poly 😂
Personally I love to get dolled up occasionally for a party but I definitely get the food thing. Buffets the way to go. Something for everyone. And you can have fish and chips and arctic roll 😂😂
Actually just thinking I went to a very posh wedding a couple of years back the food was massive cold plates of meats, smoked salmon, cheeses etc and breads for the starter. Fish and chips for the mains. Then an ice cream van for desserts. All help yourself and available for a few hours so apart from starters everyone ate when they wanted just another thought
Haha! 🤣🤣 you do make me laugh! I’ll come to your party anytime lovely lady. I used to prepare Vesta curry when I first got married in 1977! I too thought it was the bees knees until I learned better. Of course living in Yorkshire where Bradford is curry capitol, I soon learned what real curry was like. I remember the first time I had Chinese takeaway too…what wonder is this, I thought! Now, as a vegetarian for many years, often eating vegan foods (beans on toast I’m definitely up for), I shudder at some of the things I consumed in my younger years, I never did enjoy meat. I don’t remember the Supermousse, it was Angel Delight and packet mix Greens crème caramel that we had. My mum, god rest her, cooked up a mean beef stew, bacon and tomato sandwiches and yes, her favourite was always fish and chips! Since Covid all I pretty much want to do is get cozy after work, cuddle my grandkids at the weekend and a nice one-pot veggie wonder for tea 😁 keep cheering us up! Xx
Nothing wrong with having your favourites at your Party, Fish & Chip Van in the Garden 😋😋. Arctic Roll was yummy and Monday Night at my Grandma’s was a fry up with tinned tomatoes and plenty of bread. A good party is being surrounded by lovely people xx
Yes please...I'd come to one of your parties anytime....might even brush my hair to mark the occasion! Hope the Big Party goes well, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Give me good old "proper nosh" everytime! I can't be doing with a tiny bit of placed food, in the middle of a large plate. Arctic roll - yes, Vesta curry - yes, nothing beats good old fish n chips with tomato sauce! I am now organising a coach trip to the Prowse home. xx
Love this but loved arctic-roll more, also a taste of my Nans snowball on a Sunday xx
SNOWBALL!!!! Now wasn't that the pinnacle of glamour!!! My Nan used to have a Babycham or a port and lemonade - so fancy! Xx
My nanny introduced me to alcohol by making me a babycham and brandy…I think I was about 12 🥴
Oh, my Arctic roll! That reminds me of school! And I actually have one in my freezer, because I saw them in Asda the other week!
For real??? I need to get me one! X
