We have a lot to learn from our elders, and the way Olive showed compassion and no judgement - well, there's a start!
I hope he carried that feeling of support with him when he left.
It's true you never know what someone else is going through.
This fits that adage - never judge a book by its cover - perfectly!
Oh, and I hope whoever the injured member of the family was, is okay, and no limbs or digits were lost in the process... DIY is a dangerous thing.
So is housework.
I'm currently nursing a painful nail and finger as changing bedsheets caused me to lose one of my newly done nails today, in a rather unfortunate manner...
Note to self. Get others to change sheets when you're sporting talons! 💜💜💜
Exactly! We never know what others are going through. In the days when I was a teacher, often the most difficult youngsters were those who had the most awful private lives. xx
It's not easy - I've been teaching for over 30 years with children who added on mainstream schools but have additional needs moved into secondary and it feels like I'm starting over with the number of students who need support and are over looked - your blogs are a great weekly read thank you
Yes, I am a retired second grade teacher that learned a lot of heartbreaking stories of life of my precious students after they went home. And I was trying to get them to learn math and reading while their mind was reeling from their home life!
Aww bless Olive! What a clear reminder that we all need to look beneath the surface of what we are seeing. I too hope her arm is healing and I send love, light and healing to William in his hour of need. ❤️
I agree with ritu, we have so much to learn from our elders but sadly society can have a tendency to push them to the sides of life. Everyone who drinks or takes drugs usually do so because of some trauma or family breakdown in their life. A wise man I know has said that he will always help or even just listen to people because we all have stories and reasons and frankly who can blame some for wanting to push the pain and hurt away by drinking more than is socially acceptable.
We all need an olive in our life in the hope that one day we could be the olive someone may need us to be x
What a beautiful story. It's TRUE we don't know what people are going through and we shouldn't make judgement but we are all human and sometimes make wrong mistakes. God bless Olive and her wisdom xx❤
Oh how wonderful and amazing that there are people like Olive in this world. Having said that, it is also wonderful that people like you exist and the others who took their lead from Olive. Too many souls who are not being given time at the moment. I hope William does grow and blossom. I hope he has the support he needs and I hope he will remember a wonderful woman called Olive.
Thank goodness there are Olives in this world. We all need to be a little ‘Olive’ at times and show some humanity and not turn away from uncomfortable situations. Last week a person who appeared ‘down on his luck’ started walking towards me. Instinctively I squirmed and walked faster. It was afterwards that I felt ashamed of my reaction. It wasn’t a good feeling. xx
I was a nurse in my former life and worked in big London hospitals. I cared for many people like William and learnt as a young student nurse to look beyond the grime, the sometimes aggressive or anti-social behaviour and treat everyone equally with care and respect. We don’t know their story and very few choose to be homeless and all the difficulties that come with it. Next time I’ll try hard to not walk faster!
Oh, Mandy, this reads like a scene from a book!
I'm loving Olive.

Absolutely true, there. It's why one learned never to judge children or their families. An education in itself!

Oh my! What a lesson for us all. Olive may have just turned his life around. It will at least be something he will never forget, nor should any of us.

But you ‘felt’… the fact that you did feel for this person is more than many do. Many still walk away revulsed and keep that feeling.. you didn’t.
